How to Brush Your Pet’s Teeth
Proper dental care is an essential part of keeping your pet healthy, and brushing their teeth regularly can prevent a range of issues from plaque buildup to gum disease. Here’s how to brush your pet’s teeth step-by-step.
- Choose the right tools: Use a pet-specific toothbrush. Alternatively, you can use a washcloth over your finger to rub your pet’s teeth. Be sure to also use toothpaste made only for pets. Human toothpaste can be harmful to their health, so look for products designed specifically for animals. These are often available in flavors they’ll enjoy.
- Get your pet comfortable: Before you start brushing, let your pet get used to the toothbrush and toothpaste. Let them sniff and taste it, making the experience positive with treats and praise.
- Start slow: Gently lift your pet’s lip to expose their teeth, then, using the toothbrush, brush in small circular motions. Focus on the outer surfaces of the teeth where plaque builds up. Start with short sessions, gradually increasing the time as your pet becomes more comfortable.
- Be patient and consistent: Daily brushing is ideal, but even brushing a few times a week can make a big difference in your pet’s dental health. Keep the experience positive, and don’t worry if you can’t brush every tooth in one session.
Regular brushing can help reduce the need for professional cleanings and support your pet’s overall health!

How to Clean Your Pet’s Ears
Regular ear cleaning is important for your pet’s health and can prevent discomfort and infections. With the right technique and supplies, you can help keep their ears clean and healthy at home. Here’s how.
- Gather your supplies: You’ll need a pet-safe ear cleaning solution, cotton balls or gauze pads (avoid cotton swabs), and a treat or two to reward your pet.
- Choose a calm environment: Find a quiet, comfortable spot for ear cleaning. Gently hold your pet in a stable position, so they feel secure and can stay still.
- Apply the ear cleaner: Gently lift one ear flap and pour a few drops of the ear cleaning solution into the ear canal. Be careful not to insert the tip too deeply.
- Massage the base of the ear: After applying the cleaner, gently massage the base of the ear with the cotton ball or gauze pad for about 20-30 seconds. This helps loosen debris and makes it easier to remove.
- Let your pet shake it out: Most pets will naturally shake their head after the solution is applied, which helps bring any loosened debris to the surface.
- Wipe away debris: Use the cotton ball or gauze pad to wipe the visible parts of the ear, removing any wax or dirt. Be gentle and avoid going too deep into the ear canal.
- Reward your pet: Praise your pet and give them a treat to end the process on a positive note, making future cleanings easier.
If you notice redness, a foul odor, or signs of pain, please get in touch, as these symptoms may indicate an infection. For best results, check your pet’s ears weekly and clean them as needed. Regular ear cleaning can go a long way in keeping your pet’s ears healthy and comfortable!

How to Safely Administer Eye Drops to Your Dog
- Prepare the drops: Before you start, make sure you have the eye drops prescribed by your veterinarian close at hand. Shake the bottle if instructed, and have some treats ready for afterward.
- Get your dog comfortable: Sit your dog in a calm, secure spot. It may help to have them sit in your lap or on a soft surface. Gently hold their head steady, either by cradling their chin or resting your hand behind their head.
- Position the eye dropper: Use one hand to hold the eye drop bottle above your dog’s eye, being careful not to touch their eye with the tip. With your other hand, gently pull down on the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
- Apply the drops: Squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the eye. Aim for the pocket you’ve created with the lower eyelid, and release your dog’s head immediately after.
- Reward your dog: Give your dog plenty of praise and a treat to make the experience positive. This will help them stay calm during future applications.
Repeat the process as directed by your veterinarian to ensure your dog receives the proper treatment for their eye condition.

How to Give Subcutaneous Fluids to Your Pet
Giving your pet a subcutaneous (sub-Q) fluid injection at home can be an effective way to manage their hydration and health needs. Open the guide below to get started.
- Prepare your supplies: Gather the fluid bag, sterile needle, and fluid line set (tubing). Hang the fluid bag somewhere high, like on a hook or cabinet handle, to ensure gravity helps the fluids flow.
- Prime the line: Attach the fluid line to the bag, then open the clamp on the line to let a small amount of fluid run through, filling the line and removing any air bubbles.
- Ensure your pet’s comfort: Place your pet on a soft surface, like a bed or towel, and ensure they are calm. You may want someone to gently hold your pet if they tend to squirm.
- Insert the needle: Lift the skin at the loose area between your pet’s shoulder blades to create a “tent.” Gently insert the needle into the base of this tent at a slight angle, aiming for just beneath the skin.
- Administer the fluids: Once the needle is in place, open the clamp on the fluid line. Allow the prescribed amount of fluids to flow in, watching for any signs of discomfort. Most pets tolerate the process well, but take breaks if needed.
- Remove the needle and reward your pet: Close the clamp, then carefully remove the needle. Gently massage the area where the fluids were administered. Praise your pet and give them a treat to make it a positive experience.
- Monitor for side effects: Afterward, keep an eye on your pet to ensure they’re comfortable. Some pets may have a slight fluid “bump” under the skin, which is normal and will absorb over time.
With the right approach, a calm environment, and some practice, administering subcutaneous fluids can be done comfortably for both you and your pet!
